Dulcie Learns A Lesson

My focus for the second half of my story book class was a story about self confidence, something I feel is extremely important to develop in children at a very young age.
There's so many different ideas of what's beautiful and acceptable and what isn't, and it's very hard (or, it's always been hard for me at least) to accept yourself just the way you are, and not up to certain "standards" that society is general holds.

In this story, (written & illustrated by me!) the stuffed animal- cat, Dulcie, sees a brand new toy advertised on television while his best friend- owner is at school for the day. He wants to be shiny & new & fancy like the toy the children fawn over on tv, and paints himself to look like it. When the girl comes home, she's upset that her favorite play thing is missing, and she doesn't like the new toy. Dulcie realizes that it's best to be yourself, and not to change who you are just to fit in. This was a lot of fun to paint because I got to do pretty much whatever I wanted, and I used watercolor and gauche for the whole project! Some of my favorite mediums. :)

Alice in Wonderland Adaptation

This was the second book I completed, a graphic novel adaptation of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland". I'm sort of obsessed with every and any thing Alice, especially around Halloween when it's more acceptable to dress up. The story is very similar, I just changed the look of the characters.

My idea that I really wanted to play with was Alice's hair-- whenever she's feeling a different way, it's reflected in the shape of her hair. I had a lot of fun making this, although it was my first time using Prismacolor markers for an entire project, and I'm really happy with the results.

Samples of Little Miss Cupcake

This was my first completed story line idea. We had to make a 6-8 page book that told a sequential story.
The book is about a muffin who wants to be a cupcake when she sees one on the street. No longer content with her own looks, the muffin sets out to dress like that pretty cupcake, and realizes she's lost herself and gotten a headache. So she takes all the cupcake things off and remembers that she's perfect just how she is, without all that extra stuff.
